In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Pakistan and Bangladesh have resumed Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) after a 15-year pause. The high-level meeting, taking place in Dhaka, is led by the foreign secretaries of both countries: Amna Baloch for Pakistan and Jashim Uddin for Bangladesh.
The talks, which began Thursday, aim to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the two nations. Discussions are expected to cover a range of topics, including matters of mutual interest and the regional situation.
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Baloch is on a two-day visit to Dhaka for the FOC, and will also meet with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain. She will also engage with think tanks and members of the Pakistani diaspora.
The renewed engagement follows a period of warming relations between the two countries, beginning after the change in government in Bangladesh last August.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has met with Chief Adviser Yunus twice since then, fostering improved ties. Bangladesh has already eased visa restrictions for Pakistani citizens and introduced direct shipping routes. Pakistan, in turn, is eager to promote cultural exchange and increase trade, tourism, and investment.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is also expected to visit Bangladesh later this month, further signaling the commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties. The resumption of FOCs marks a crucial step in normalizing relations and fostering a more collaborative future between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
