Weather adds to travellers’ misery as Torkham closure enters Day 5

at 3:13 PM

The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan remained closed for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday, halting trade and pedestrian movement.

Hundreds of travellers are stranded on both sides of the border, facing harsh weather conditions including rain and cold temperatures.

The prolonged closure has resulted in significant financial losses for traders, estimated to be in the millions of rupees. Perishable goods, including fruits and vegetables, are spoiling in stranded vehicles.

The closure follows a tense standoff between Pakistani and Afghan forces that began on Friday.

The initial incident stemmed from Afghan forces attempting to construct a checkpoint in the zero point of the border. Pakistani forces intervened, halting the construction. However, Afghan forces took up positions in response.

This led to heightened tensions between the two sides, with Pakistan closing the border in response.

A meeting between Pakistani and Afghan officials on Monday yielded no resolution, and a solution to the issue is uncertain.

Torkham is one of eight border crossings between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Hundreds of pedestrians and goods trucks cross the border each day in both directions.
