Wagah border opens briefly to facilitate stranded visa holders

While tensions between Pakistan and India continue to simmer, the Wagah border crossing has been opened for two days to allow long-term visa holders to cross in both directions.

According to a report in The Express Tribune, Long-Term Visas (LTV) and No Objection Return to India (NORI) visa holders will be facilitated through the temporary opening. The move will allow movement for the people who had been stuck due to the recent border closure.

The report added that 129 Pakistanis with NORI visas crossed into India on Monday. However, no Indian citizens have entered Pakistan yet and their arrival is likely on Tuesday and Wednesday.#

Pakistan issues these long-term visas to Indian citizens who have married Pakistani citizens and settled permanently in the country. India issues NORI certificates for this purpose to Pakistani nationals.

A day after the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 tourists in Indian-Occupied Kashmir, India had closed the Wagah-Attari border and revoked short-term visas for Pakistanis. Pakistan had done the same a day later for Indian citizens. The visas affected under the measures included those issued for business, tourism, and medical purposes. Following the border closure, there had been reports that several visa holders had been stranded on both sides.
