A US delegation led by Adam Boehler, US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, and including former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, met with Taliban acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul on Saturday.

Hamdullah Mohib, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban interim government, confirmed the meeting on X (formerly Twitter). Mohib stated that the discussions covered bilateral relations, citizens’ issues, investment opportunities, and other potential collaborations between the two countries.

Both sides emphasized their commitment to continued dialogue on various matters, particularly concerning citizens imprisoned in both countries. Muttaqi reportedly referenced previous talks in Doha, suggesting that this is a good opportunity to normalize relations and that no insurmountable obstacles exist.

Boehler expressed condolences regarding the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. He described his previous visit to Kabul as productive and encouraged continued engagement to achieve positive outcomes. He also reiterated the US’s respect for Afghanistan’s self-determination and stated that the US does not seek to impose anything on the Afghan people. The discussions also included areas of mutual benefit for both nations.
