US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday in a bid to de-escalate tensions between Pakistan and India.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Baker and Dar ‘exchanged views on recent regional developments’.
“DPM/FM reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and security while safeguarding national interests,” the statement added.
MoFA added that Baker conveyed US’ desire for de-escalation of ongoing tensions. She also added that US is engaging with both countries on the matter.
Tensions have soared between Pakistan and India in recent weeks after the latter blamed Pakistan for the Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
Both countries have revoked visas and slashed diplomatic presence in the other country already. India has also announced that it will hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on Wednesday that Pakistan has ‘credible’ intelligence that India could undertake military action in the next 24-36 hours. India has reportedly given its military operational permission to act against Pakistan.
