The United States has approved a potential $304.1 million sale of missiles and related equipment to Türkiye. The Pentagon announced the deal on Wednesday.
According to a report by Turkiye Today, the package includes 53 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) and six AMRAAM guidance units, valued at approximately $225 million. These missiles are designed for air combat and are compatible with Türkiye’s F-16 fighter jets. The sale also includes 60 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles, 11 AIM-9X tactical guidance units, and logistical support, totaling $79.1 million.
The Pentagon stated the sale will bolster Türkiye’s air defense capabilities, aiding in the protection of its homeland and U.S. personnel stationed there. The proposed sale has been submitted to the U.S. Congress for review; they have 15 days to raise objections. If no objections are raised, the sale will proceed with RTX Corporation, based in Arizona, serving as the primary contractor.
The Defence Security Cooperation Agency formally notified Congress of the potential sale on Wednesday. The AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missile, manufactured by Raytheon, is a highly advanced short-range infrared-guided missile with air-to-air, air-to-surface, and surface-to-air capabilities.
