A man has been detained for allegedly killing two staff members of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC on Wednesday night. The shooting took place outside a Jewish Museum in Washington, where an event was underway.

The identity of the two staffers has not been released, but the Israeli embassy said that they were a young couple planning to get engaged. They were shot as they exited the building.

The suspect has been identified as Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old man from Chicago who was seen pacing outside the museum before the incident. He was stopped by museum security as he tried to enter the museum after the shooting.

Rodriguez reportedly shouted ‘Free, Free Palestine’ after the shooting, according to reports.

US President Donald Trump has said that the incident is obviously based on anti-Semitism.

“Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things as this can happen! God Bless You ALL,” he wrote on Truth social.

Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro arrived at the scene of the shooting. FBI director Kash Patel has also received a report on the incident.

The site of the incident is in close proximity to several tourist sites as well as government buildings.
