In a significant development, negotiations between the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Baraqambar Khel tribe of Khyber District have successfully concluded. The talks, held in two phases, aimed to restore peace and stability in the region.

The second and final phase of the negotiations took place in the Bar Bagh area of the Tirah Valley. This critical jirga (tribal council) was led by tribal elder Haji Zahir Shah Afridi and witnessed the participation of tribal leaders, TTP representatives, religious scholars, students, and a large number of local residents.

The negotiations, which began on July 28, were initiated when the Baraqambar Khel tribe presented five key demands to the TTP. After deliberation and consultation with their leadership in Afghanistan, the TTP agreed to these demands.

The TTP has committed to refraining from firing in residential areas, public gatherings, or tribal guesthouses (hujras). Violators will face strict action.  The TTP also agreed to prohibit the collection of forced donations, including extortion. Any individual found violating this clause will face severe consequences. The TTP also pledged not to interfere in personal, family, or regional disputes of the tribes.

The agreement includes provisions for strict action, in collaboration with the tribal council, against those tarnishing the reputation of the tribe. A list of affected individuals will be provided by the tribal council, and any innocent person will be ensured justice in accordance with Sharia law.

Haji Zahir Shah Afridi hailed the agreement as a major victory for the community. He expressed gratitude to God for this success and voiced hope that the agreement would pave the way for long-term peace in the region.

This landmark agreement marks a critical step in reducing tensions and fostering harmony in the historically volatile region of Tirah Valley.
