Trump Urges Immediate Gaza Ceasefire: Efforts Underway to Secure Agreement on Peace

President Donald Trump has proposed a new plan to end the war in Gaza. He invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House to discuss the proposal. The meeting comes as several Western nations have recognized a Palestinian state, despite opposition from the U.S. and Israel.

According to Reuters, this marks Netanyahu’s fourth visit to Washington since the start of Trump’s second presidential term. Netanyahu is seeking to strengthen his relationship with the U.S. at a time when Israel is facing increasing international isolation.

Netanyahu has been heavily criticized following the recognition of a Palestinian state by countries including Britain, France, Canada, and Australia. These nations have stated that this step is necessary to preserve the two-state solution and end the conflict. Netanyahu has called the United Nations General Assembly’s decision on the matter “shameful.”

On Sunday, Trump told Reuters that he hopes Netanyahu will agree to a framework to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of the remaining hostages. Trump praised the assistance of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Egypt, stating that their support signifies peace not just for Gaza but for the entire Middle East.

The peace plan, which was circulated among Arab and Islamic countries last week, calls for the release of all hostages, an end to Israeli attacks on Qatar, and new negotiations for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.

A senior Israeli official told Reuters that it is premature to comment on the peace agreement, and that Netanyahu would present Israel’s response to Trump during the meeting. While Netanyahu continues the war against Hamas, he faces significant pressure at home from the families of the hostages and war-affected citizens. Additionally, Israel is dealing with an order from the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes, which Israel denies.

Meanwhile, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), has issued a dire warning about the situation in Gaza. According to Al Jazeera, Lazzarini stated in a video message that schools in Gaza have been completely destroyed. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), he added that people are forced to live in the rubble, with their main daily concern being finding food and water.
