Trump Told Modi to Avoid War with Pakistan During Diwali Call, Claims Credit for Preventing Conflict

On Tuesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a Diwali celebration at the White House. Trump said the two leaders mostly talked about trade, but they also discussed the importance of avoiding conflict between India and Pakistan.

Trump stated, “We had a great conversation, mainly about trade. But we also talked briefly about ensuring that there’s no war with Pakistan. That was very, very important.” He added that because trade was also involved in the talks, they were able to reach a positive outcome. “There is no war between Pakistan and India, and that’s a very good thing,” Trump said.

During the event, Trump praised Modi, calling him a “great man” and a “great friend.” He also repeated his earlier claim that he played a key role in reducing tensions between India and Pakistan during a conflict in May of that year. Trump said he used trade-related pressure to help stop the fighting.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had praised Trump’s leadership and active role in easing the situation. However, India denied Trump’s claims that he was responsible for the ceasefire.

In May of that year, tensions had escalated between the two nuclear-armed nations after an attack in the Indian-controlled region of Pahalgam, Kashmir. In response, India launched “Operation Sandhoor,” and Pakistan carried out a counter-attack named “Bunyan Mursous.” The four-day conflict resulted in dozens of deaths, and both countries reportedly used fighter jets and missiles.

Pakistan claimed to have shot down six Indian fighter jets, including a modern French-made Rafale. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later increased the number, saying Pakistan had taken down seven Indian aircraft. India admitted to some losses but denied that six planes were destroyed.

Trump also mentioned that Prime Minister Modi wants to see an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and has already reduced India’s oil purchases from Russia.

Following the call, Prime Minister Modi thanked Trump on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) for the Diwali greetings and the phone conversation. Modi wrote, “On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to brighten the world with hope and stand united against terrorism.”
