President Trump today claimed credit for brokering a “full and immediate ceasefire,” which he believes to be permanent, between India and Pakistan. The President described the conflict as “dangerous,” involving two nuclear-armed nations engaged in “hot and heavy” fighting that appeared unstoppable.

“On Saturday my administration helped broker a full and immediate ceasefire, I think a permanent one between India and Pakistan ending a dangerous conflict of two nations with lots of nuclear weapons, and they were going at it hot and heavy and it was seemingly not going to stop,” Trump stated.

He praised the leadership of both countries, saying, “the leadership of India and Pakistan was unwavering, powerful but unwavering, in both cases having these they really were from the standpoint of having the strength and the wisdom and fortitude to fully know, and to understand the gravity of the situation.”

Trump further revealed that trade played a significant role in achieving the ceasefire. “I said come on we’re gonna do a lot of trade with you guys, let’s stop it let’s stop it if you stop it we do a trade if you don’t stop it we’re not gonna do any trade. People whenever you use trade the way I used it then I can tell you and all of a sudden they said I think we are gonna stop. And they have and they did it for a lot of reasons, trade is a big one.” He added that the US will be negotiating future trade deals with both India and Pakistan.

The President emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We stopped the nuclear conflict, I think it could have been a bad nuclear war. Millions of people could have been killed. I’m very proud of that.” He thanked Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Rubio for their instrumental roles in the negotiations.
