Trump once again claims China is controlling Bagram

United States President Donald Trump once again said on Tuesday that the Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan is under Chinese control.

Addressing the National Republican Congressional Committee Dinner in Washington, Trump said that many disasters, including how the Afghanistan withdrawal took place, would never have happened if he was president.

“Afghanistan disaster would never have happened, most embarrassing moment in the history of our country,” he added.

Trump added that although he was the one who planned the withdrawal, he was going to ‘keep Bagram’ which he described as one of the biggest in the world.

“I was going to keep it, not for Afghanistan, because its one hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” he said.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to have it? You know who occupies it now? China occupies it,” he added.

This is not the first time Trump has made this claim. Earlier in March, Trump said that Bagram was under Chinese control which evoked a strong reaction from the Afghan government.

“Bagram is controlled by the Islamic Emirate [Taliban regime], not China. Chinese troops are not present here, nor do we have any such pact with any country,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had said.

Bagram airbase was the headquarters of the US forces during its invasion of Afghanistan. The base is situated 44 km north of Kabul, the country’s capital.

The airbase has been in the news recently over speculation of US trying to regain control of the facility. However, no definite reports have emerged so far.
