Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq said on Friday that trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan will increase by more than 100% in the coming year.
Sadiq made the statement in a post on X, along with a video of dozens of trucks carrying goods across the border.
The Torkham border is one of eight border crossings between the two countries and is used by thousands of commercial vehicles and pedestrians daily.
However, the border crossing had been shut down for almost a month after hostilities flared between the border forces of the two countries on February 20.
The tensions had began when Pakistani forces had objected to building of a checkpost in the zero-point area of the border by Afghan forces. Instead of halting the construction, the Afghan side had taken up positions forcing Pakistan to close the border and evacuate its staff to Landi Kotal. Severe exchanges of fire had followed, leading to casualties on both sides.
Thousands of trucks and passengers had piled up on both sides of the border due to the border closure, leading in losses worth millions.
However, jirgas on both sides became active to reopen the border and held several meetings. The border was finally reopened on March 20.
