Torkham closed for fourth day as negotiations falter

The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan remained closed for the fourth day on Tuesday as a round of negotiations between officials from both sides ended without any breakthrough.

According to reports, border officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan met on Monday to find a solution to the impasse. However, no conclusion was reached.

The border crossing has been closed since Friday night after tensions soared between the border forces.

Afghan officials had reportedly started the construction of a checkpost at the zero point of the border. Afghan forces took up positions when Pakistani officials asked for the construction to be halted.

In response, Pakistan issued a security high alert and closed the border for all types of traffic. Pakistani border officials were also evacuated to Landi Kotal.

However, the border closure has had dire implications for passengers and traders. Hundreds of people waiting to cross the border are stuck on both sides, and traders could lose millions due to the shutdown of commercial transport.
