Shehbaz calls for weather alert systems for Gilgit Baltistan after flood devastation

Following devastating floods in Gilgit-Baltistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the establishment of an advanced weather alert system for the region’s tourist destinations. The system will be based on seasonal forecasts to help prevent future emergencies.

The Prime Minister chaired a meeting addressing the recent floods and ongoing rehabilitation efforts. He emphasized the need for early warning systems, improved preparedness for relief operations, and the construction of climate-resilient infrastructure in vulnerable areas, considering the impact of climate change.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Climate Change were instructed to jointly establish a forecasting and monitoring center for Gilgit-Baltistan within the coming months. A comprehensive rescue and assistance system for emergency situations is also to be developed. The NDMA is to work closely with provincial governments and relevant institutions to improve rescue and relief efforts.

The Prime Minister stressed the urgency of completing all rehabilitation measures for those affected by the recent monsoon season. A survey of damage to roads and infrastructure is to be conducted, and communication links in affected areas must be restored as a priority. He expressed sorrow over the loss of life caused by the recent rains and floods, highlighting Pakistan’s disproportionate vulnerability to climate change-induced disasters despite its minimal contribution to global emissions.

The meeting received briefings on the losses caused by the monsoon, expected weather conditions, and actions already taken. The Ministry of Climate Change reported on progress in installing an early warning system for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The Prime Minister directed the NDMA to fully cooperate with the Ministry to complete this installation within two months, mandating third-party validation of the system’s deployment. He also instructed the Minister for Water Resources to remain in Gilgit-Baltistan to oversee consultations and planning for improved water management. The operation to rescue over 600 people following cloudbursts in July 2025 involved the Pakistan Army, NDMA, district administration, police, GBDMA, Rescue 1122, and health workers. All damaged infrastructure is to be rebuilt with climate resilience in mind.
