Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Friday strongly condemning India’s attempts to implicate Pakistan in the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir earlier this week.  The attack, which killed at least 26 people and injured 17 others, saw gunmen open fire on tourists in the popular resort town.

The resolution, moved by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, stated that Pakistan rejects India’s accusations and the “frivolous and baseless attempts” to link the country to the April 22nd attack.  The Senate characterized India’s actions as a “mala fide campaign” to tarnish Pakistan’s image and exploit the issue for political gain.

The resolution also condemned India’s suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a “blatant violation” and an “act of war.” This action, along with the closure of borders and downgrading of diplomatic ties, followed a series of aggressive measures taken by India after the Pahalgam attack.

The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to peace while asserting its readiness to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any aggression, including water terrorism or military provocation. The resolution demanded that India be held accountable for its alleged involvement in acts of terrorism and targeted assassinations in other countries. The Senate also reiterated its unwavering support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Senator Sherry Rehman echoed these sentiments, criticizing India’s actions as irresponsible and escalating the situation between two nuclear powers. She highlighted the historical context of the Indus Waters Treaty and warned against the weaponization of water resources.

While emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to peace, she underscored the country’s resolve to defend itself if provoked.  Her remarks included a pointed reference to India’s past actions and the capture of an Indian pilot, Abhinandan Varthaman, in 2019.

The resolution comes a day after the National Security Committee announced countermeasures against India including closing airspace to Indian planes, revoking visas and limiting Indian diplomatic presence in Pakistan.
