Another polio case has been confirmed in Sindh, taking Pakistan’s toll for the year 2025 to two cases.

The latest case was confirmed in Sindh’s Badin district on February 12. The first case was confirmed in Dera Ismail Khan earlier this year.

The latest case comes soon after Pakistan completed the first polio vaccination drive of the year from February 7-9.

Pakistan reported 74 cases of the virus in 2024 after only reporting six cases in the prior year. In 2024, the highest number of cases was reported from Balochistan (27) followed by Sindh (23) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (22). Meanwhile, Punjab and Islamabad reported one case each other.

Polio is preventable by vaccination and has been eliminated from all but two countries in the world: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Vaccination drives have traditionally faced hurdles by propaganda that misuses religion. In recent years, terror attacks against polio workers and security officials guarding them have also escalated, posing another significant obstacle to effective vaccination.
