Salik meets union leader in Italy for welfare of Pakistani workforce

Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Chaudhry Salik Hussain met Maurizio Landini, General Secretary of Italian General Confederation of Labour, Italy’s largest trade union, at the Pakistani Embassy in Italy.

Salik and Landini held a discussion to protect the rights of the Pakistani workforce working in Italy. Salik highlighted the established credentials of the Pakistani workforce and called for measures to protect them.

“Workers should have a sense of belonging and the assurance that someone is there to protect their rights and interests,” the minister said.

Landini appreciated the engagement from Pakistan and welcomed closer dialogue and cooperation and invited Pakistan workforce to join CGIL to gain from the dividend of its membership. Salik invited Landini to visit Pakistan to improve institutional cooperation between the two countries.

Italy is home to the largest Pakistani diaspora outside of UK, with 300,000 people. A total of $1.12Bn was remitted from Italy in 2024.

Chaudhry Salik Hussain also attended the funeral of Pope Francis on behalf of Pakistan during his visit to Italy.
