Pakistan’s maritime sector has achieved a significant global milestone as Port Qasim in Karachi was named the world’s ninth most improved container port in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2024, released by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.

The index analysed over 400 global ports and Port Qasim’s outstanding performance highlighted Pakistan’s rising global prominence. Port Qasim recorded an extraordinary improvement of 35.2 points in just four years, from 2020 to 2024, making it a stellar example of global success. This surge reflects effective operations, digitalization, faster cargo handling, and a significant reduction in vessel waiting times.

Federal Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry hailed this achievement as a moment of national pride stating that policy reforms and effective regulations played a key role in this success. According to the report, digitalization, cargo automation, and real-time tracking set a new benchmark for port efficiency. The Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT), managed by DP World, was instrumental in maintaining global standards.

Chairman Port Qasim, Rear Admiral (R) Moazzam Ilyas, attributed the success to the hard work and commitment of the port’s workforce, noting that modern technology and innovation have brought the port operations on par with global standards.

The Government of Pakistan has approved a long-stalled dredging project for the port’s further development. This project will create deeper channels, enabling the docking of larger vessels and consequently boosting trade volume. Furthermore, new berths and storage facilities are expected to significantly enhance the port’s export capacity.

Port Qasim’s improved performance is projected to reduce the cost of imports and exports. This global success will attract further foreign investment and solidify Pakistan’s position as a stable logistics hub in the region. This milestone confirms that Karachi, Gwadar, and Port Qasim are collectively forming a modern maritime triangle for the country.
