Pakistan is observing the 27th anniversary of its nuclear tests on today, with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirming their unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Youm-e-Takbeer, or Day of Power, commemorates the successful nuclear tests conducted in 1998.

President Zardari, in his message, stated: “On this momentous occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the entire nation. Today, we observe the 27th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer — a day when we demonstrated our nuclear capabilities and established strategic deterrence. This day serves as a reminder of our commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of our beloved country.” He also highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and respect for international law, noting that Pakistan’s response to recent Indian aggression was “measured and effective, which forced the enemy to cease its hostile actions.” The President paid tribute to the scientists, engineers, and leadership who made the nuclear program possible, specifically mentioning Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto for their foundational roles.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed the President’s sentiments, hailing Pakistan’s nuclear journey and emphasizing the significance of Youm-e-Takbeer. He stated: “Today on Youm-e-Takbeer, I thank Allah Almighty and congratulate from the core of my heart the entire nation and all patriotic Pakistanis.” The Prime Minister linked this year’s commemoration to Pakistan’s recent success in defending itself against what he termed “an unjustified war imposed by India,” declaring: “The joys of Youm-e-Takbeer have further increased for a nation filled with victory.” He praised the “iron resolve” demonstrated in responding to India’s nuclear tests in 1998. PM Sharif also paid tribute to the architects of Pakistan’s nuclear program, including Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, and urged the nation to carry the spirit of Youm-e-Takbeer into economic transformation. He concluded with the statement: “Today we pledge to make Pakistan an economic power and achieve its true place in the world. Insha Allah. Long live Pakistan.”

The Armed Forces of Pakistan, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and the services chiefs also issued a statement congratulating the nation and reaffirming their commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty. The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability.
