A massive peace jirga was held at the Takht Nusrati Sports Ground in Karak District on Sunday, drawing thousands of participants, including political and tribal leaders. The jirga issued a three-day ultimatum to militants and armed groups operating in the area, warning of an operation by local militia if they fail to leave.

The gathering, aimed to restore peace and security and uphold constitutional and fundamental human rights. Speakers emphasized the government’s primary responsibility to maintain law and order, highlighting the detrimental effects of insecurity on both civilian life and economic activity. They expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, which has created a climate of fear and severely impacted businesses and daily routines.

The jirga was notable for the participation of leaders from across the political spectrum. Attendees included MNA Shahid Khattak, Provincial Minister for Agriculture Major Sajjad Barakwal, former provincial minister Malik Qasim Khan, JUI provincial leader Malik Imad Azam Advocate, leaders from the Khattak alliance, and representatives from various other political parties.

Speakers adopted a strong stance against terrorism, demanding effective implementation of the National Action Plan, indiscriminate action against militants and their facilitators, and a social boycott of those supporting them. They underscored the people’s determination to fight for their rights, even in the face of perceived government inaction, asserting that ignoring the public’s concerns constitutes a failure of leadership.

A resolution was passed, demanding:

  1. Militants leave the area within three days.
  2. An operation by local militia if the militants fail to leave within three days.
  3. The government take serious action against those spreading terror in Karak, ending the distinction between “good” and “bad” Taliban.
  4. A complete boycott of those facilitating militant activities.

The jirga formed a peace committee to further expand the movement and announced a historical peace march in Karak city on Sunday.
