Kurram’s Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Saeed Manan was injured by firing from unknown assailants on Friday.
Manan was visiting Boshehra in Parachinar and was accompanied by security when he was injured. He is now being treated at the Parachinar District Headquarters Hospital
Earlier reports had said that a firing incident in upper Kurram left two people injured on Friday, leading to a lengthy exchange of fire between tribes.
The two men were identified as Abbas Ali and Gul Ali, were injured by firing from unknown assailants. The men later told the media that they were sitting in the sun when they were suddenly fired upon.
While the two men were being transferred to the hospital, their vehicle collided with another causing injuries to six more people. All eight are now being treated in Parachinar Hospital. Among the injured, one woman is said to be in critical condition.
Tribal leader Haji Abid said that the incident marked the 14th time peace has been shattered in the area since the peace agreement in early January. He added that repeated violations of the peace agreement are deplorable and the government should take notice.
Abid also called upon the people of Kurram to play their part in ensuring peace is upheld in the district.
Kurram has been embroiled in a violent conflict between Shia and Sunni tribes for almost four months. The government finally managed to get the tribes to sign a peace agreement brokered through a grand jirga in January. However, the peace has been shattered multiple times including an attack on Kurram’s district commissioner on January 5 and an ambush on an aid convoy on January 16.
The government had responded to the previous violations by launching a search and clearance operation in four village councils of lower Kurram. Authorities claimed that a massive number of weapons had been confiscated in the operation.
Authorities have also proceeded with the plan of demolishing bunkers across the district. Police and FC officials will be posted in place of the destroyed bunkers.
Meanwhile, aid convoys are making their way to the district at regular intervals.
