A staff member of the Indian High Commission in Pakistan was declared persona non grata and told to leave the country within 24 hours, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.
According to MoFA, the action was taken as the official was found to be ‘engaging in activities incompatible with his privileged status’.
The statement added that the official has been directed to leave the country within 24 hours.
MoFA also said that the Indian charge d’affaires was sunmoned over the matter and handed a demarche.
Although MoFA did not reveal the staff member’s identity, Dawn reported the member was identified as Shankar Reddy Chintala.
The two countries agreed to a ceasefire on May 10 after exchanging missile strikes, stemming from tensions after India accused Pakistan of being behind the Pahalgam attack. The claim has been denied by Pakistan.
Even as the ceasefire endures, tensions between the two countries have remained high, with Indian PM Narendra Modi telling Pakistan it would only talk to Pakistan on terrorism, and Pakistan responding by calling Modi’s remarks as a portraying desperation.
