Pak, Afghan officials to negotiate as Torkham border closure enters third day

at 1:23 PM

The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan remained shut for all types of traffic for the third consecutive day on Monday.

Officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan will hold a meeting on Tuesday in Torkham to find a way to resolve tensions and reopen the border.

Although there has been no official comment from the Pakistan side, the meeting has been confirmed by Afghan Commissioner Abdul Jabbar Hikmat.

Tensions began on Friday night when Afghan border officials reportedly began construction of a checkpost in the disputed part of the border.

When Pakistani officials told the Afghan side to stop the construction, the latter took up positions, causing tensions to soar.

This led to the border being closed for all types of traffic including pedestrians and Pakistani staff being evacuated to Landi Kotal.

The Torkham border connects Khyber district in Pakistan with the Nangarhar province in Afghanistan. It is one of eight border crossings between the two countries and is used by hundreds of trucks and thousands of pedestrians each day.
