The situation in Azad Kashmir has worsened following violent protests staged by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). According to a statement issued by the Information Department from Muzaffarabad, a total of nine people including six civilians and three police personnel have lost their lives so far, while more than 222 individuals, both civilians and police officials, have been injured. The administration has appealed to the public to remain peaceful and to avoid spreading fake news on social media.

Government sources confirmed that out of the 38 demands presented by the protesters, 36 have already been accepted. However, the 37th demand requires a constitutional amendment regarding assembly seats, while the 38th demand relates to “perks and privileges.” The committee has sought the removal of certain bureaucratic benefits as well as new entitlements for itself, demands which the government has said cannot be implemented without nationwide legislation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep concern over the situation in Azad Kashmir and taken strict notice of the unrest.

He stated that peaceful protest is the constitutional right of every citizen, but demonstrators must refrain from disturbing public order.

The premier directed law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint and patience, respect public sentiments, and avoid unnecessary use of force.

Expressing concern over the tragic incidents, the prime minister ordered a transparent investigation and directed immediate assistance for the affected families.

For a peaceful resolution, the premier also decided to expand the negotiation committee, adding Senator Rana Sanaullah, Sardar Yousaf, Ahsan Iqbal, Masood Khan, and Qamar Zaman Kaira to the body.
