NEPRA approves reduction in basic electricity tariff

Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs 1.15 per unit in the country’s basic electricity tariff. The decision, announced on Wednesday, follows a request from the federal government to lower the base tariff.

NEPRA’s official statement confirmed the decrease and forwarded the decision to the federal government for formal notification. The revised tariff will take effect upon official government notification.

This announcement follows a previous NEPRA decision to reduce K-Electric’s (KE) tariff by Rs 2.99 per unit. This earlier reduction, applicable to the March fuel adjustment, will be reflected in June electricity bills, offering some relief to Karachi consumers who have faced high power costs and extensive load-shedding.

Karachi has recently experienced increased, unscheduled power outages amidst the summer heat, prompting protests from residents and elected officials. In a recent interview, K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi acknowledged the high electricity costs but attributed them to government policies.
