In a major breakthrough, Azad Kashmir authorities have announced the dismantling of a large terrorist network operating within the region.
A joint press conference by Azad Kashmir’s Minister of Interior, Waqar Noor, and Inspector General Rana Abdul Jabbar revealed details of the operation. The investigation began after the October 27, 2024, shooting at the Shujaabad checkpoint, which resulted in the death of Constable Sajjad Resham.
The subsequent investigation led to the identification of several suspicious individuals, culminating in the arrest of several key figures. Among those arrested is Saqib Ghani, apprehended on March 19, 2025, at the Azad Pattan entry point with a significant amount of weaponry.
Ghani confessed to his involvement with Zarnoush Nasim (alias Qasim), Osama (alias Muhammad), and Hanzelah (alias Ulfat), who are implicated in Constable Resham’s murder and an attempted arson attack on the City Bagh police station. The group is also linked to attacks on the Motorway Police in Islamabad and the Sangjani toll plaza. Further investigation revealed the network’s plans to target sensitive locations within Azad Kashmir.
Osama, one of the key operatives, surrendered voluntarily, leading to the recovery of grenades and a pistol. During interrogations, the arrested individuals confessed to numerous acts of sabotage across the region, detailing their activities in video statements.
The minister also highlighted the escape of Ghazi Shahzad from Rawalakot jail. Shahzad’s confirmed links to hostile agencies in Afghanistan raise serious concerns, according to the minister. The Minister of Interior stated that Abdul Rauf, a terrorist based in Afghanistan, is actively recruiting vulnerable youth under the guise of Jihad and Sharia law. Noor said that the network received support, funding, and training from across the border in India.
He presented evidence of the network’s planning of recent acts of sabotage in Azad Kashmir. Legal action is underway against those who facilitated these acts. Noor emphasized the role of security agencies in maintaining peace in Azad Kashmir, urging citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement. He concluded by reassuring the public that Azad Kashmir remains, and will continue to be, a peaceful region.
