At least seven volunteers have died and six others have been injured after a landslide struck a water channel in Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM, according to a spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government.
The volunteers were working on restoring the water channel when a large mass of mud and debris collapsed, burying them. Rescue workers have been working throughout the night to recover the bodies and rescue the injured.
At least three of the people people sustained injuries and have been transported to local hospitals, where emergency services have been activated. Medical aid is being provided to the injured.
Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has expressed grief over the tragic incident and ordered the acceleration of rescue and relief efforts. A wave of mourning has swept through Gilgit following the devastating landslide.
