Kurram tense as govt continues demolishing bunkers

The situation in Kurram District remains tense, as a government operation to demolish bunkers continues.

Despite numerous jirgas held in Kohat and Peshawar to establish peace, implementation of any agreements remains a significant challenge. Sources indicate that while progress towards peace is ongoing between the involved tribes, major obstacles persist.

The district continues to face severe food shortages, with aid convoys delayed due to pending security clearances. Furthermore, fuel shortages are acute, with petrol and diesel completely unavailable in Kurram.

The prolonged closure of major roads for four months has exacerbated the difficulties faced by the affected population, according to local sources.

Kurram has been embroiled in an armed conflict between Shia and Sunni tribes for almost four months, causing the lives of over 100 lives.

The government finally managed to broker peace through a grand Jirga of tribal elders from both sides. However, the peace has been shattered multiple times in the same month, causing the government to continue heavy deployment of security.

While aid has slowly trickled into the district, security clearance is needed before each convoy departs for Kurram. In all, a total of 435 trucks have reached Kurram. However, trade and tribal leaders have complained that the aid is simply not enough for the large population of the district.
