A seminary in Karachi has disassociated itself from the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban chief Noor Wali Mehsud and revoked the certificate of graduation issued to him in 1999.

In a notice issued on June 25, Jamia Arabia Ahsan-ul-Uloom, which is located in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, said that Noor Wali Turabi, son of Haji Gul Shah Khan had studied at the seminary and was awarded a certificate in 1999 after completing ‘Daura-e-Hadees’.

However, the seminary said that it abides by Pakistan’s laws as an education institute and strictly prohibits any activities any non-academic activities.

The seminary further added that in view of proof of Noor Wali’s activities against the state, the seminary has distanced itself from him and revoked its certificate.

On the same date, another Karachi seminary, the Jamia Darul Uloom Yaseen-ul-Quran said that Noor Wali has no link with the institution whatsoever, and any certificates, if issued, stand revoked.

Since August 2024, Pakistani authorities have referred to the banned TTP as ‘Fitna Al-Khwarij’. The notification from the Ministry of Interior that announced this change said that the group was using the name of Islam as a cover to pursue its illegal militant activities.
