A local affiliate of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat was shot dead and another injured in firing by unknown men in Peshawar on Monday.

Maulana Ijaz Abid was shot dead in Peshawar’s Pishtakhara area, while Qari Shahid was injured.

Abid was also the provincial head of the Aalmi Majlis Tahaffuz-e-Khatme Nabuwat.

The attackers came and fled on a motorcycle and CCTV footage is being used to track them. Police have described the attack as a target killing and have recovered 30mm casings from the site of the attack.

A joint investigation team has been established to probe the killing. However, there have been no arrests so far.

The killing follows a spate of attacks against Deobandi clerics and political workers across the country. At least four different Jamiat-e-Ulema leaders were attacked in March, with three succumbing to their injuries.
