Jaffer Express mastermind killed in Afghanistan: security sources

Rehman Gul alias Ustad Mureed, a leader of the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army who masterminded the hijacking of the Jaffer Express has died under mysterious circumstances in Afghanistan, security sources said on Saturday.

Gul had been involved in or had masterminded numerous terror attacks in Pakistan especially those targeting Chinese citizens in Pakistan and security forces personnel.

He was reportedly involved in the attack on the Chinese Consulate in Karachi in November 2018, the attack on Chinese nationals in PC Gwadar in May 2019 and the attack on the Pakistan Stock Exchange in June 2020. Gul was also behind the attack on Karachi University Confucius Institute in April 2022 which had claimed the lives of three Chinese nationals.

Gul was also involved in the attack on the Quetta Railway Station that martyred 31 soldiers in November 2024 and the Khuzdar School bus attack targeting children in May 2025.

During the Jaffer Express Attack, Gul was reportedly in contact with the hijackers throughout the operation and had masterminded the operation.

No details have been revealed as to how Gul met his end in Afghanistan.
