Pakistan Railways train Jaffar Express came under attack near Sibi in Balochistan on Tuesday.
According to a statement from Pakistan Railways, the train was travelling from Quetta to Peshawar when it came under fire between the Pehro Kunri and Gadalar stations. The train was attacked between tunnels 8 and 9.
The train came under intense fire, injuring the driver, who has been identified as Amjad Yaseen. Railway officials are trying to establish contact with the train.
The train is made up of nine carriages and is carrying over 400 passengers, several of whom are feared to be injured.
Emergency has been imposed in Sibi’s hospitals. Several ambulances have also been despatched to the scene.
Shahid Rind, spokesman for the Balochistan government, has also confirmed the attack. Rind added that the relief operation is facing difficulties due to the terrain and remoteness of the location.
However, he added that security forces are on their way to the area and the government is looking at the attack from all angles.
The attack has been claimed by the the proscribed Baloch Liberation Army.
This is not the first time the Jaffar Express, a popular train, has been attacked. In November 2024, a bomb exploded at the Quetta Railway Station as crowds waited to board the train in the morning, killing at least 25 people.
