Indus River flood levels remain high at Sukkur and Kotri; Sutlej breach exacerbates crisis in South Punjab

Medium flood levels persist at the Sukkur and Kotri barrages on the Indus River, according to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) data updated at 9 a.m. today. Outflows at Sukkur are exceeding 360,000 cusecs, while Kotri is registering nearly 320,000 cusecs, with both locations reporting steady flows. Flood levels at the Guddu barrage have receded to low levels.

However, the situation in south Punjab has dramatically worsened following a devastating breach of the Sutlej River at Noraja Bhutta. This breach has inundated an additional 150 villages across Multan, Lodhran, and Bahawalpur districts, displacing thousands. Floodwaters have encroached upon a 20-kilometer stretch near the Multan-Sukkur M-5 Motorway.

Several villages have been submerged, including Nowshera Jadeed, Saadullahpur, Soiwala, Nai Basti, and Basti Chakar in Bahawalpur, and Adam Wahan, Munshi Wala, Jhangra, and Thali Wala in Lodhran. Jalalpur Pirwala remains underwater, and authorities are considering a plan to breach the M-5 Motorway to redirect floodwaters into the Chenab River. A technical committee will review the feasibility of this plan.

The M-5 Motorway is currently closed due to flooding, according to Motorway police spokesperson Imran Shah. Diversions have been implemented, with alternative routes via the national highway from the Shah Shams and Uch Sharif interchanges being provided to travellers.
