Pakistan’s imports from India have increased for the fourth time this year, despite an ongoing trade suspension between the two countries.
According to sources within Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce, imports from India in February 2025 saw a 28% year-on-year increase, reaching $26.8 million.
The volume of this trade was $20.8 million in the same period last year. Previous increases in imports from India were recorded in August and September of the current fiscal year.
The trade suspension between Pakistan and India began in August 2019, but Pakistan has since eased restrictions, notably allowing the import of life-saving medicines. Government sources confirmed this exemption.
The current government has seen four instances of increased annual imports from India within its first year in office.
The revelation comes as the government continues its efforts to stabilise the economy. Inflation levels have fallen to their lowest level since 2015, leading to a decrease in the policy rate. Pakistan also recently unlocked the second tranche of a bailout program with the International Monetary Fund plus another $1.3 billion loan for climate resilience efforts.
