US President Donald Trump claimed Friday that as many as five jets were shot down during recent clashes between Pakistan and India. The statement, made during a White House dinner with Republican lawmakers, offered no further details.
“In fact, planes were being shot out of the air. Five, five, four or five, but I think five jets were shot down actually,” Trump stated.
The conflict, which began after an April militant attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), escalated significantly on May 7. Indian jets bombed multiple sites in Pakistan, triggering a fierce exchange of attacks involving fighter jets, missiles, drones, and artillery. The fighting, which lasted several days, resulted in dozens of casualties before a ceasefire, brokered in part by the US, was implemented on May 10th.
Pakistan claimed responsibility for shooting down six Indian planes, while a top Indian general later reported that India adjusted its tactics after initial losses, gaining an advantage before the ceasefire.
Trump has repeatedly taken credit for the ceasefire, a claim disputed by India, which maintains that the resolution of the conflict should be handled directly between the two nations without external intervention. Despite India’s stance, the US President continues to assert his role in de-escalating the situation.
The April attack in IIOJK, which killed 26 people, significantly heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours. New Delhi blamed Pakistan for the attack, a claim Pakistan vehemently denies, calling for an independent investigation.
