‘Harden the State’ committee approves three-pronged approach to fight terror

The Pakistani government has announced a comprehensive plan to tackle terrorism, employing a three-pronged approach encompassing military operations, strengthened legislation, and a targeted national narrative.

The strategy, approved at a high-level meeting of the ‘Harden the State’ committee was chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by the Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, aims to build upon the National Action Plan implemented following the 2014 Peshawar school attack.

According to a report in Dawn, the plan involves targeted military operations against terrorist groups, including the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), referred to officially as ‘Fitna al-Khawarij’.

It also emphasizes strengthening existing laws and fostering a national discourse to counter extremist ideologies.

The government intends to engage all segments of society in this effort.Prime Minister Sharif stressed the importance of a multi-pronged strategy, combining ground operations, legal reforms, and public communication to discourage extremism.

He highlighted the need for effective coordination between federal and provincial governments in implementing the plan’s recommendations.

The Prime Minister also praised the efforts of security personnel and law enforcement agencies in combating terrorism and smuggling.

The meeting also addressed the repatriation of Afghan refugees, with a decision to expedite the process. The participants reiterates the aim to create a secure and stable environment to attract international investment.
