Fresh wave of rains set to hit Pakistan

As Pakistan continues to grapple with the aftermath of torrential monsoon rains that have claimed numerous lives, a new monsoon wave is expected to hit the country from July 20th to 25th. Authorities have issued warnings of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, dust storms, and potential flash floods across several regions.

The impending monsoon spell adds to the ongoing crisis, with rescue teams still recovering bodies and rescuing citizens trapped in floodwaters. At least seven more deaths have been confirmed, bringing the total death toll higher, with the majority of fatalities attributed to collapsing roofs, landslides, and other rain-related incidents. Over 180 people have been rescued from inundated areas in Punjab alone.

Flood alerts have been issued for major rivers, including the Indus River at Kalabagh and Chashma, where high flood levels are anticipated. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has placed all districts on high alert, specifically naming Rawalpindi, Murree, Galyat, Attock, and several other districts as areas expected to experience heavy rainfall. South Punjab is also expected to be affected.

The government is facing criticism for its handling of the crisis, with Senator Barrister Ali Zafar accusing both the federal and Punjab governments of “gross negligence.” He called for a parliamentary committee to investigate the response to the disaster.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy monsoon activity across all provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, detailing specific regions and timelines for anticipated rainfall. The PMD has also warned of potential flooding and landslides in various areas, urging citizens to exercise caution. Authorities are working to evacuate people and livestock from vulnerable areas and prepare relief camps.
