Heavily armed group of militants launched a coordinated assault on the town of Zehri in
Khuzdar district, Balochistan, on Wednesday morning, resulting in significant damage to
government buildings and the theft of a substantial sum of money. The brazen attack, which
lasted for several hours, saw the militants seize control of the main bazaar and surrounding
areas before security forces intervened and regained control.
The attack began around 11 pm on Tuesday night when approximately 80 militants, reportedly
arriving in five vehicles and over 20 motorcycles, infiltrated Zehri from the nearby mountains.
They quickly established checkpoints throughout the town, effectively cutting off access and
preventing any immediate response from security forces.
According to the reports the militants’ targets included key government infrastructure. A Levies
Force station was stormed, with personnel taken hostage and the building subsequently set
ablaze. Records were ransacked, and significant damage was inflicted on the structure and its
contents.
A private bank branch also suffered a direct assault, resulting in the theft of over 90 million
rupees from the bank’s vault, according to Quetta-based bank officials. Employees were also
held hostage during the robbery.
Further acts of vandalism and destruction targeted the Zehri municipal committee offices and
the local National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) office. Both buildings were
ransacked, with records, computers, and other vital equipment destroyed by fire. According to
the videos circulating on social media, militants used a mosque loudspeaker to broadcast their
presence and pronounce their control over the area to assembled residents.
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack. Upon receiving
intelligence reports confirming the presence of a heavily armed militant group within
Zehri, security forces swiftly responded by establishing a perimeter around the affected area.
They cordon aimed to prevent the militants from escaping and to contain the situation, limiting
further potential damage and casualties. A comprehensive operation was immediately
launched, involving a coordinated effort between ground troops and air support. Military
helicopters were deployed to provide aerial surveillance, enabling security forces to monitor
the militant’s movements and provide tactical support to ground units.
Kalat Commissioner Naeem Khan Bazai told the media that the armed militants entered Zehri in
five vehicles and over twenty motorcycles, equipped with the latest automatic weapons. He
stated that they remained in the area for at least eight hours. He further explained that when security forces launched an operation, the militants escaped, taking two Levies vehicles, twenty AK-47 rifles, four thousand rounds of ammunition, and ten motorcycles with them.
