Chief of the Pakistan Navy, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, has said that the Navy expects to receive its first Hangor-class submarine, built with China’s cooperation, into active service next year.

In an interview with Global Times, Admiral Ashraf said that the delivery of all eight Hangor-class submarines, a program scheduled for completion by 2028, is progressing smoothly. He described the successful launch of the second and third submarines in China this year as a major milestone in the naval cooperation between Pakistan and China.

According to the Admiral, the construction of these submarines will not only enhance the Pakistan Navy’s combat capabilities but also help achieve greater self-reliance through technology transfer to the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works.

Admiral Ashraf also highlighted the Type 054A/P frigates as another major success in Pakistan-China maritime collaboration. He said these multi-role frigates are among the most modern warships in the world and have significantly strengthened the Navy’s air defence, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime surveillance capabilities.

He added that these platforms are playing a vital role in ensuring maritime security in the northern Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.

Admiral Ashraf noted that the platforms and equipment acquired from China are reliable, technologically advanced, and well-suited to the Pakistan Navy’s operational needs.

He emphasized that the partnership between the Pakistan Navy and China is based on deep friendship, mutual trust, and shared strategic interests. The Admiral expressed hope that this cooperation will further expand in the coming decade, covering areas such as shipbuilding, training, technology sharing, and industrial collaboration.

He reaffirmed that Pakistan views China as a trusted partner in safeguarding the vital sea routes that are essential for the global economy.
