Fact-Check: Viral flood and mudslide video misattributed to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir

at 5:56 PM

In the aftermath of heavy rains and flooding across northern Pakistan, a viral video of a massive mudslide has been widely circulated on social media. Users and even some media outlets misattributed the clip to different regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Pakistan-administered Kashmir (POK). However, a closer investigation reveals the footage is actually from Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan.

Claim:
Multiple viral posts on X (formerly Twitter) shared dramatic footage of a massive mudslide and flooding, with captions claiming the incident occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan or in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (POK).

Examples include posts by accounts such as FrameTheGlobe, MonitorX, and RT India, all of which presented the same video with varying location claims.

Fact:
The footage is not from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Kashmir. A fact-check by Khabar Kada traced the visuals to Mintika Lodge in Gulmit, Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan.

Google searches show the lodge in the same location, and a matching logo on the board.

Conclusion:
The video has no connection to the recent floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or the reported casualties in Kashmir. It was filmed in Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan. Misattributing such visuals to conflict-affected or disaster-hit regions risks spreading misinformation and creating confusion among the public.

Verdict: Misleading – The viral mudslide video is from Hunza, not KPK or Kashmir.
