Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, pressing for international support in addressing cross-border terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.

During the meeting, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and the UN Charter, highlighting the country’s upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2025-2026).

While emphasizing Pakistan’s strong support for the UN’s role in global challenges, including peace, security, development, and climate change, Dar specifically focused on the situation in Afghanistan. He called for UN assistance in combating terrorism originating from within Afghanistan and stressed Pakistan’s intention to provide significant humanitarian aid to the Afghan people, currently facing widespread destitution.

He further proposed the implementation of connectivity projects between Central Asia and Pakistan via Afghanistan to stimulate economic development in the region.

Dar also used the opportunity to advocate for a just resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with UN Security Council resolutions, and reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for a two-state solution in Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds as its capital. He condemned Israeli actions against Palestinians.

The meeting also touched upon the upcoming Summit of the Future with Dar expressing hope for the full implementation of the Pact for the Future to address the financial needs of developing countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate goals.

Secretary-General Guterres expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s active involvement in UN affairs and its contributions to international peace and security through peacekeeping efforts.  Dar’s visit to New York includes participation in a high-level UN Security Council meeting on “Practicing Multilateralism: Reforming and Improving Global Governance” convened by China.
