A botched suicide bombing killed at least one person and injured three others in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Thursday.
Initial reports said that the bombing had taken place inside the office of the Afghan Ministry of Urban Development and Housing.
Abdul Matin Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that the attack took place but did not provide more details.
Mohammad Kamal Afghan, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, later said that the suicide bomber was identified moments before he entered the building to explode himself and was shot to death by the ministry’s guards. However, the bomber’s killing triggered an explosion.
Afghan added that the incident took place just before noon and confirmed that at least one person died in the attack and three were injured.
Offices of Afghan ministries have been attacked in the past as well. In December 2024, Refugee Minister Khalil Haqqani was killed inside his office in a suicide bombing. The attack took place as Haqqani was leaving his office and injured six others inside the building as well.
Thursday’s attack comes a day after 21 people were injured and 33 injured in an attack on a Kabul Bank branch in Kunduz province. ISKP later accepted responsibility for the attack.
