Bajaur tribal leaders, TTP extend ceasefire in hope of resolving conflict

Following several rounds of negotiations, tribal elders from the Bajaur Amn Jirga and leaders of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have reached a ceasefire agreement. The agreement, reached Sunday evening after Maghrib prayers, will remain in effect until a complete resolution to the conflict is achieved through further dialogue.

While Sahibzada Haroon Rashid, head of the Bajaur Amn Jirga, refrained from commenting on the specifics of the talks, sources within the Jirga revealed that the TTP agreed to withdraw from civilian areas, a key demand of the elders. The negotiations focused on persuading the TTP to either return to Afghanistan or retreat to mountainous regions if they wished to continue fighting security forces. The third round of talks, held in Lowi Mamund tehsil, lasted several hours.

Rashid expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the seven-hour meeting, although details remain scarce pending a briefing with senior officials. Concerns remain, however, as residents of Thangi area in Salarzai tehsil urged authorities to maintain a security post in their area, fearing for their safety should it be removed.
