A terrorist attack on a police station in Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was successfully repelled early Saturday morning, forcing the assailants to retreat.

A police statement confirmed that the attack on the Pezo police station began at 12:45 am.  Police responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in an exchange of fire.

The attackers, identified as members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fled due to the police’s quick and decisive action. No casualties were reported among police personnel.

Lakki Marwat District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Jawad Ishaq commended the officers for their bravery and effective response in thwarting the attack.  This incident is the latest in a series of attacks targeting police stations and check-posts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this month, including previous attacks in Lakki Marwat and Peshawar earlier this week.

A recent report revealed that there has been a rise in attacks against law enforcement agencies in KP since the beginning of the new year.

According to the report, there have been 58 terrorist attacks against the KP police this year resulting in the martyrdom of 26 police officials while 30 were injured. In response, the police killed at least 69 terrorists.

Meanwhile, another Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam leader was shot to death on Friday, this time in Punjab’s Attock district.

Qari Nizamuddin was the vice-chairman for JUI-F for Attock. He was shot by unknown men right after taraveeh prayers on Friday night.

Police said that the incident was a ‘targeted’ attack that occurred near Nizamuddin’s home.

This attack follows other incidents of targeted attacks against JUI officeholders in several parts of the country. Maulana Shah Mir Aziz Buzdar, a JUI office holder in Turbat, was killed on March 8. He was shot from behind during taraveeh prayers.

On March 14, Maulana Abdullah Nadeem, a JUI district leader in South Waziristan, was injured when a bomb went off inside the mosque during Friday prayers.
