Pakistan’s armed forces will receive a special relief allowance in the upcoming fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Finance. Testifying before the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue on Thursday, Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal announced that officers will receive an allowance equivalent to 50 percent of their basic salary, while junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and soldiers will receive 20 percent.
The announcement comes amidst a downward revision of the federal development budget, raising concerns among lawmakers. While the ministry confirmed the allowance, it did not disclose the total financial implications of this decision, nor did it explain the disparity in the allowance rates between officers and enlisted personnel. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb promised to provide further details later.
The meeting also highlighted other budgetary concerns, including a reduction in the public sector development program and potential further cuts before the end of the current fiscal year. Lawmakers expressed anxieties about the impact of these reductions on economic growth and various economic indicators. The discussion further touched upon various economic challenges facing Pakistan, including tax revenue, inflation, and the overall state of the economy.
The news of special relief for the armed forces come after the recent military clashes with India. Pakistan had downed at least six military jets and hit military targets in India after India launched missiles at several Pakistani cities.
