Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Thursday that his visit to Kabul is set to take place in the next few days.
Addressing a joint press conference with Hungarian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó in Islamabad on Thursday, Dar said that Pakistan is continuously working to engage Afghanistan.
He added that Pakistan has also appointed a special representative to Afghanistan who has extensive experience as a career diplomat and ambassador in Kabul.
“Preparatory meetings have been ongoing and hopefully, within days, I’m visiting Kabul for a day to break this jamlog which has been there for the last few years,” Dar said.
The foreign minister’s remarks come a day after Special Representative Sadiq Khan landed in Kabul for a meeting of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Coordination Committee. The meeting had been stalled since January 2024.
Meanwhile, another delegation led by Afghanistan’s Minister for Industry and Commerce Noor Uddin Azizi also arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday for talks. The delegation included members of multiple departments as well as private sector employees.
Relations between the two countries have been strained in recent months as Pakistan continues to state that terrorist groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Baloch Liberation Army are enjoying safe havens in Afghanistan. Pakistan has also began the second phase of repatriating refugees by the thousands.
