Roads to Kurram still closed as bunker demolition continues

The demolition of militant bunkers continues in Kuram district as part of ongoing efforts to establish lasting peace, according to government sources.

Officials report that 990 bunkers have been destroyed to date under the Kohat Peace Accord.

However, this process is hampered by ongoing road closures, causing severe food shortages and hardship for residents.

Local sources report that the road closures, coupled with the eight-month closure of the Pak-Afghan border crossing at Kharlachi, have severely disrupted the supply of essential goods.

Citizens are facing significant difficulties, and a protest demonstration continues outside the Peshawar Press Club, with participants vowing to maintain their sit-in until roads are reopened and aid is provided to those affected.

Pakistani and Afghan officials are reportedly engaged in efforts to reopen the Kharlachi border and restore supply lines, with ongoing communication between the two sides.

Parachinar has been closed for several months due to an armed conflict between Shia and Sunni tribes in the region. Although the government managed to broker a peace agreement in January, the cessation of hostilities has proved to be temporary. Since then, authorities have tried to keep the Thall-Parachinar highway open and has conducted operations to disarm combatants and demolish bunkers.
