The 24th meeting of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, was held on Monday. The cabinet received a briefing on the implementation of the provincial government’s decisions aimed at establishing lasting peace in Kurram district.
The briefing revealed that 189 people lost their lives in various clashes in Kurram since October last year. However, thanks to the provincial government’s efforts, a peace agreement has been reached to normalize the situation.
The cabinet was told that nine convoys comprising 718 vehicles carrying essential supplies have been despatched to Kurram so far. The briefing claimed that there is currently no shortage of essential commodities in the area.
The briefing added that a helicopter service, initiated on the chief minister’s instructions, has facilitated the transportation of nearly 4,000 people via 153 flights by two government helicopters. Furthermore, 19,000 kilograms of essential medicines have been delivered to alleviate shortages.
The cabinet was also briefed on the ongoing demolition of bunkers in Kurram, a key element of the peace agreement. A total of 151 bunkers have been demolished so far, with a deadline set for the demolition of all remaining bunkers by March 23.
To enhance security along the Thall-Parachinar Highway, a special security force is being established, involving the creation of temporary and permanent security posts. A total of 120 security posts will be established, requiring the recruitment of 407 personnel. The cost of equipment for these posts is estimated at Rs764 million.
Finally, the cabinet was informed that an estimated Rs480 million will be allocated for the restoration of the damaged Bagan Bazaar. The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue efforts to restore peace and stability to Kurram district.
