KP govt reaffirms commitment to upholding peace in Kurram

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday to address the ongoing situation in Kurram district. The meeting, attended by the Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Additional Chief Secretary (Home), and other relevant officials designed a comprehensive plan to restore peace and stability to the region.

The meeting decided that the demolition of illegal bunkers in Kurram will resume immediately and four convoys carrying essential supplies will be dispatched to Kurram by the end of the month. It was also decided that a jirga comprising signatories to the Kurram peace agreement will be convened to reiterate their responsibilities in upholding the agreement and village-level committees will be activated to enhance local participation in maintaining peace. Both sides have been tasked with developing a mechanism for the disarmament of the region and submitting it to the government promptly.

Compensation for victims of the Baggan incident will be contingent upon their cooperation with the government and administration, and impartial action will be taken against terrorists and militants from both sides, the meeting decided.

The meeting also affirmed that arrests of those named in FIRs will be carried out and that the civil administration and police will take the lead role in all operations, supported by other law enforcement agencies. Special security teams will be deployed to secure the Kurram Road, and the police will finalize plans for temporary and permanent recruitment and Immediate steps will be taken to rehabilitate and beautify the affected Baggan Bazaar.

It was also decided that the provincial-level monitoring committee headed by Barrister Saif will be further empowered.

A statement after the meeting also urged political leadership and elected representatives to actively participate in restoring peace.

Additional measures include deploying more police personnel and prosecuting all elements disrupting peace and their facilitators will be arrested and prosecuted were also announced.

The CM also called for a unified media narrative to be presented on the Kurram situation, effectively countering negative propaganda.

Kurram has been engulfed in a violent conflict between Shia and Sunni tribes for over three months. The government conducted a search and clearance operation to confiscate weapons from Lower Kurram and aid convoys have resumed once again.
